Case Study:
Gil Norris is a retiree who lives with his wife in Harlow, Essex. Gil is worried about the environment and recently has taken this interest one
step further by becoming the first person in his area to install a solar thermal system to his semi-detached home.
The solar panel on Gil’s home harnesses the sun’s power to provide a regular source of hot water that is pumped directly into his home. The Norris’ British Eco Solartwin hot water system takes its name from the small solar-powered pump that the system uses to drive water around a thermal solar panel. This pump directs the control of water through the panel dependent upon the power of the sun and means that no external energy source is required to run the solar system, this is unique in that it produces a zero carbon footprint.
Since its installation in January Mr Norris has slowly transferred his hot water production from his boiler to the British Eco solar system and has been totally reliant on the system since March when he was able to turn his hot water boiler off all together. Solartwin is designed to work all year round, producing hot water even in winter months and on cloudy days, Mr Norris can expect to save about 70 per cent on his existing hot water bills and reduce his carbon emissions by about one ton per year. This was certainly part for the attraction for Gil. He says: “I have been delighted with my solar hot water system since I had it installed.
The system is fantastic and means that most of my hot water is being generated from the sun which helps to save the environment and saves me money. Because of the good weather that we have had in February and March I have been completely reliant on my system for hot water. I have been able to turn off the emersion and lower my energy bills so as far as I am concerned the system has already begun to pay for itself.”
Mr Norris’ Solartwin system cost around £3500 and with the current energy savings that he is making he expects that the system will have paid for itself within the next six years. Mr Norris has been so pleased with the installation of his British Eco Solartwin system that he plans to carry out other eco renovations to his Harlow home: “Since I’ve switched over to my Solartwin system I’ve really got the green bug. I think my next project will be to change some of my electricity over to renewable supplies.”
The Norris’ Solartwin system was installed by British Eco one of the UK’s leading specialists in solar hot waters systems for the home. British Eco is one of the UK’s leading providers of environmentally friendly and renewable energy products. Andrew Moore, Managing Director of British Eco, has seen a growing number of people using eco friendly products in their homes: “The Norris’ success story shows how easy and effective renewable energy systems can be in the home, but their case is by no means unique. We have seen a growing number of people and businesses adopting eco-friendly technology in their homes from solar powered lighting to hot water systems and everything in-between. The technology is more affordable than ever before and we are working to ensure it is accessible to people across the country. We help to demystify the process of buying a solar system. Our website and expert team offer independent advice on a number of solar hot water systems from a range of manufacturers and our customers can be confident that they will not have to endure the hard-sell tactics that are employed by a number of solar companies.”
Mr Norris has been delighted with the service he has received from British Eco. He says: “When I was first looking to install the solar hot water system I approached a number of companies, however British Eco were by far the best. I was instantly impressed by their swift response to my enquiry as well as the excellent customer service that I received. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for anything eco orientated and will no doubt be using the company again in the near future.”
