How can you protect yourself against rising energy bills and save money?

In the first quarter of this year, BritishGas reported an 11% rise in profits, just a few short months after increasing their tariff prices.

Research shows that since 2004, energy prices have increased by a whopping 146%! In 2004, the average annual energy bill in Britain was £543, and today it stands at £1,336.

The most worrying thing about this trend is that energy bills in the UK are only going one way – up. Homeowners are left paying more and more for their bills every year, whilst energy companies rake in huge profits.

But there is another way…

Renewable energy technologies provide you with a way to protect yourself against future price rises, as well as lowering your bills significantly.

Financial incentives, such as the Feed-in Tariff for Solar PV, have long enticed homeowners to invest in Solar PV.

But forgetting the incentives available, investing in renewable technologies makes strong financial sense. You will be lowering your bills as well as protecting yourself against future increases in energy prices for 20 years, as an absolute minimum. With the added bonus of Government incentives which are fixed and guaranteed, paid for every unit of energy that you generate, you can benefit from a return on investment of anywhere between 10-15%, and that's just for a standard small PV system. So not only are you saving money, but you are being paid for doing so!

Consumers have a choice when it comes to their energy bills, and you don't have to accept paying more and more each month just because your energy company is pushing it's prices up. You can free yourself from the stranglehold of energy companies by producing your own energy, using modern technologies which are designed to work efficiently in any weather conditions.

If you would like independence and freedom from rising energy bills, BritishEco can help. We have been supplying, designing and installing systems for a wide range of clients for many years.

We offer free, impartial and professional advice and can provide you with a free quotation to show you how much you could be earning and saving.

Government survey shows growing support for renewable energy

A recent survey by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) shows support for renewable energy, including wind and solar, has grown amongst the British public over the last year.

The survey of over 2,000 people, carried out last month, found that public support has reached a 12 month high. In January, 79% of those surveyed said they supported renewable energy, with this figure increasing to 82% in March.

According to the survey, Solar PV remains the most popular renewable technology, with 85% of participants supporting it – an increase of 3% since June 2012.

The results show that, despite opposition from some factions of right wing media, the general public are supportive of the Government's drive towards low-carbon energy.

With energy bill price hikes becoming a common feature throughout the last few years, it is thought that the British public are turning against 'greedy' energy companies and looking to become self-sufficient in their energy supply. By doing so, they are not only supporting low-carbon energy and lowering their carbon emissions, but in the vast majority of cases are saving significant amounts of money on their energy bills each month.

Climate Change Minister Greg Barker announced this week that the upcoming consultation on the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) will see an increase in tariffs for some technologies under the scheme.

Following delays to the launch of the domestic RHI, the Minister insisted that the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) now had a ‘credible, sensible timeline for delivery of the policy’ and confirmed that the government will shortly propose changes to the tariffs available to businesses installing renewable heat technologies. Barker confirmed that these changes will see an increase in the tariffs for some technologies.

“I am absolutely determined to drive the take-up of renewable heat…We will publish a set of indicative tariffs that we think the industry will be encouraged by”, he said.

To provide extra confidence to his claims, Barker stated that the there will be a high level of certainty on the level of tariffs for the non-domestic sector going forward ‘within a matter of weeks’.

The RHI allows users of renewable heating systems ot earn a generous tariff based on the amount of energy their system produces – so not only will you benefit from lower energy bills, but you'll also be paid for doing so.

The commercial RHI is currently available, with the domestic scheme set to launch in Spring/Summer 2014. Early adopted of the domestic scheme are able to benefit from the Renewable Heat Premium Payments (RHPP) scheme – giving homeowners access to cash value vouchers as a discount off the price of installing renewable technology.

Recent EU legislation could see Solar PV panel prices soon increase by as much as 15%.

During the next few months there will be a consultation period, where an investigation will be launched by the European Commission to determine whether the increase in price will become a legal requirement for many Solar PV manufacturers.

As a result of this, many panels have already begun to increase in price, pushing up the price of Solar PV systems to homeowners and businesses alike.

The good news…

The good news is that BritishEco have secured a large amount of stock which will not be affected by this price increase. This stock has been imported prior to this potential legislation change and the subsequent price increases.

If this legislation is allowed to go ahead, it is likely that once this stock runs out, the cost of a Solar PV system will increase quite significantly, affecting your Return on Investment.

Currently, for a typical 4kW domestic Solar PV system, you could receive a Return on Investment of up to 13%

Consumers will soon be hit with higher energy bills as a result of an increase in the amount of energy being imported into the UK. It is predicted by the energy watchdog that the closure of some of the UK’s power stations could mean a 10% fall in UK energy production as soon as April.

Ofgem’s chief executive Alistair Buchanan has said that the UK needs more gas supplies to fill the shortfall when the old power stations have been closed and whilst renewable energy production is still growing.

The shortfall is expected to be filled by increasing gas imports; however these imports are likely to cost more as providers will have to compete on the global market for the supplies. These higher costs will then being passed on to the consumer.

When speaking with the BBC, Mr Buchanan expressed that it is very important to resolve "leaky homes" and become more energy efficient in order to avoid the approaching "near crisis". Other energy experts have also commented saying that consumers and businesses need to make sure they are not using more than they need to.

Six million households are currently in fuel poverty with this predicted to rise to nine million by 2016. It is therefore extremely important that consumers look at insulating their homes and becoming more energy efficient.

Consumer’s annual energy bills have increased by more than £500 in 5 years – even though on average our energy demand is less as many people have been forced to cut back.

But it doesn’t stop there – it has also been reported that carbon taxes will increase the average household’s energy bill by £50.

We can all shop around for better deals and tariffs but this may not always provide you with adequate savings.

The biggest and longer term savings will come from making your home more energy efficient by installing measures such as insulation, renewable energy technologies, glazing, heating and lighting controls and upgrading heating and hot water systems.

By installing renewable energy measures you could be entitled to receive the Governments incentives and grants providing you with a great return on investment.

We can all keep talking about increasing energy bills – but if you want to make a real difference you need to look to improving your home!

A year on from Mr C’s installation he is very impressed in the overall performance of his system which has exceeded its estimated annual generation. According to the Met Office, 2012 was just slightly worse than long-term average for total hours of sunshine, so that makes the over-performance of this installation all the more impressive.

‘Our 3.68kWp system was installed in November 2011. The BritishEco representative had achieved something I hadn’t been able to do. He had persuaded my wife that, because of the shape and orientation of our roof pitches, the panels could be placed in such a way that they would be nearly invisible from ground level, and at the same time he had persuaded me that the East and West facing orientation of the arrays would still provide adequate performance. He was right on both counts.

Since being installed the system has been performing better than expected. Having seen a complete calendar year of use, I’m delighted with the results. Monitoring is easy with Bluetooth-enabled communications between the inverter and my PC (onto which I downloaded some free software – recommended by the inverter manufacturer – SMA – for the purpose). I don’t even have to get up from my chair in order to access key performance data – both historical and real-time data are at my fingertips.’

On 25th January, the Green Deal Finance Company (GDFC) confirmed that the initial interest rate for finance packages adopted under the Green Deal energy efficiency scheme will be set at 6.96%.

Many observers had previously predicted that the interest rate would be between eight and nine percent, but the GDFC have said they are committed to providing ‘competitively priced finance (which is) open to all’.

The GDFC have also outlined the set up charges for the Green Deal which includes an initial £63 set up charge for each Green Deal Plan and an annual operating charge of £20 per year which is likely to be included in the overall cost of the finance for households or businesses that sign up to the scheme.

With these additional costs factored in, the costs and interest rates have been designed to encourage the take-up of energy efficiency improvements and households and businesses will get a better rate of interest overall if they undertake a wider range of improvements.

For example:

A Green Deal package of £1,500 which only included the installation of basic insulation would attract a maximum interest rate of 9.34%.

A more comprehensive package of measures worth £5,000 would attract 7.96% annual interest rate over 10 years, or 7.65% over 25 years.

Chief Executive of the GDFC, Mark Bayley, explained that this finance structure would be beneficial to those who are committed to lowering their energy bills and carbon emissions: ‘Our all-in cost of finance shows that the more energy efficiency measures a household takes advantage of, the better the long term return in terms of savings, and the lower the cost of overall finance’.

The interest rates are comparable to the best high street rates for long-term unsecured loans and will adhere to the Green Deal ‘Golden Rule’ – meaning the repayments will always be lower than the savings people receive on their energy bills, ensuring that consumers will be better off every month as a result of installing energy efficiency measures.

The Green Deal scheme officially launches on Monday 27th January and is backed by a major cash back offer which will provide early adopters with payments worth hundreds of pounds.

The Government are hopeful that the opportunity to undertake improvements at no upfront cost, guarantee savings on energy bills and in some cases receive cash back in excess of £1,000 will encourage significant interest and take up for the scheme.

With the cold weather in full force across the UK, and energy prices increasing, many homeowners are concerned about their average heating bill and want to know how to save energy and reduce bills.

Last week it was announced that the average heating bill had reached nearly £600 – with many paying a lot more. This represents an average increase of 63% since 2008.

Monthly heating bills have surged year-on-year, with many homeowners now forced to choose between spending their money on heating their home or on other day-to-day necessities such as food or travel.

A recent survey by USwitch revealed that last winter, three quarters of households were forced to go without heating at various times to keep their heating bill down.

With the recent price hikes consumers have faced this year, almost 90% of homowners are reportedly planning to ration their heating usage to cut their costs this winter.

Five of the 'Big Six' energy companies have raised their tariffs in recent weeks by an average of £90 per year. With further rises expected, many are accusing these companies of profiteering whilst leaving many homeowners struggling to pay their heating bills.

What can you do?

There are many ways that you can lower your heating bills, such as switching your heating off, wearing more layers whilst indoors and limiting your hot water usage. However, with energy bills increasing year-on-year, many of us are not able to make changes significant enough to reduce our bills by a noticeable amount. It's a frustrating cycle; we focus on energy reduction, only for our energy tariffs to increase anyway.

But there are ways that you can reduce your bills permanently AND protect yourself from any future energy price hikes.

Independence, financial security and lower energy bills

Switching to renewable energy enables you to produce and use your own energy, whilst giving you financial security from volatile energy price hikes and lower energy bills for many years to come.

In addition to this, generous incentives such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) mean that not only will you benefit from substantially reduced bills, but you will be paid for doing so! Read more about the Renewable Heat Incentive here.

Using Air Source Heat Pumps, Ground Source Heat Pumps, Biomass Boilers or Solar Thermal systems could generate thousands of pounds worth of annual earnings and savings for you as the owner of the system.

There has never been a better time to protect yourself from high energy bills.
