Ofgem confirms Feed-in Tariff RPI increase - February 17, 2012

45.4p from 1st April for pre 3rd March installs

Ofgem have published an updated table outlining the Feed-in Tariff rates as of 1st April 2012, which reveals that the Feed-in Tariff for solar PV will increase by 4.8%.

An annual boost from the Retail Price Index (RPI), caused by inflation, means that the Feed-in tariff will increase from 43.3p to 45.4p/kWh.

This new tariff will apply to installations which take place before 3rd March 2012, and will come into effect from 1st April 2012. However, it is dependent on whether the Government are successful in overturning the ruling that their previous cuts to the Feed-in Tariff were ‘unlawful’.

Although the outcome of the Feed-in Tariff court case is yet to be decided, it is widely speculated that the Government will lose their appeal to the Supreme Court. This speculation is largely driven by the news on 23rd December 2011 that the Government had lost their first appeal to the High Court on this ruling.

If the Government lose this appeal, all installations from 3rd March 2012 will receive the 43.3p rate until 1st April, after which the rate will drop to 21p. Those who installed PV systems before 3rd March 2012 will receive the higher tariff of 45.4p for the lifetime of their tariff.

If the Government win their appeal, all installations which took place after 12th December 2011 will receive the lower tariff of 21p.
